A Typical Year
Lent Term

Classes continue and dancers enjoy showcasing their skills at Burns Night events at colleges and businesses in and around Cambridge. In past years, some of our more advanced dancers have competed at the RSCDS Newcastle Festival in February. Lent term also features the Oxford and Cambridge Highland Ball, organised jointly with the Oxford University Scottish Dance Society, and the Branch's Annual Dance.

Michaelmas Term

The first term of the Cambridge year is focused on welcoming new dancers. Our annual Freshers' Ceilidh is held and classes are designed to introduce new dancers to the steps and formations. Later in the term, our more experienced dancers enjoy performing for St. Andrew's Day events and at the Mill Road Winter Fair. The term concludes with the Winter Dance, which is organised by the Reel Club and the Cambridge and District Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS). At social dances such as this, we dress formally and enjoy dancing the dances we've been practising with a wide range of people. Live music is often provided.

Easter Term
Easter is the busiest term overall for Scottish dancers in Cambridge. Before the beginning of term, some of our students enjoy travelling to the RSCDS Spring Fling - a weekend of classes and evening dances for dancers aged under 35. Previous Spring Flings have been held in Bonn, Glasgow and Paris. During the term, balls or evening dances are organised on most Saturday evenings by either the Reel Club, the Branch, Cambridge Scottish Society or the South East Herts Scottish Country Dance Society - a welcome respite from the monotony of revision! Unlike other balls in Cambridge, Scottish balls don't break the bank - it's possible to attend all Easter term's local balls and evening dances for less than the price of a May Ball ticket!

Long Vacation

The summer almost always features the RSCDS's Summer School in St. Andrews - a week-long course packed with classes and fun. Each day features an evening dance with live music and the week includes trips to the beach and to Janetta's Gelateria! Financial support is available to enable students to attend St. Andrews. Past summers have also included trips abroad, most recently to Paris and Kraków.
